Signing on: reality bites

Madam, – After the seemingly endless months of bank bailouts, elections, three-way debates and avoidance of responsibility, it seems as if it is only now that the real stories of the real effects of the economic nightmare are filtering through. Emigration, unemployment and despair. Few pieces have captured this as well as the article “Then one day he realises his daughter is deaf” (Signing On, Life & Culture, March 1st) .

As a parent I can only imagine the torture and worry that the family went through. That they bore it with such grace and have a happy outcome to report is testament to both themselves and persistence.

We all have a lot to learn, and be grateful for after reading the article. I can only hope that those politicians who have recently been left with more time on their hands have had chance to read the piece and reflect on the effects of their actions and inactions. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL FRAIN,

Downpatrick Road, Dublin 12.
