Sir, – Brian Maye’s Irishman’s Diary (August 9th) about Parnell monument’s 100th anniversary was both informative and interesting. In it he makes reference to Dublin’s other obelisk, Wellington’s Monument in the Phoenix Park.
It too celebrates an anniversary this year. One hundred and fifty years ago, on June 18th, 1861 Wellington’s Monument was opened to the public.
Designed by Sir Robert Smirke, It stands at 62 metres and is Europe’s largest obelisk. Unlike other obelisks around the world Wellington’s Monument is shrouded in darkness at night and there is nothing but a small sign on Chesterfield Avenue telling you its name.
Surely 150 years on, we as a city and nation can forgive Arthur Wellesley, First Duke of Wellington for his utterances about his fellow countrymen and light up this European giant. – Yours, etc,
