Madam, – In relation to the September 15th article entitled “Two-thirds support gay marriage, poll finds”, I can’t help but question David Quinn who, effortlessly putting the words “marriage” and “religion” right beside each other, as if the whole of Ireland were aware of some inherent mutualism between the two, fails to address the question of happiness within these stone-set marriages the Iona Institute seems so keen on promoting.

Cohabitation is a mature step forward in an adult relationship, and two people in love shouldn’t be prevented from getting to know each other for fear of God. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Asking a bunch of à la carte Catholics their opinion on church moral teaching is like asking my three-year-old what she would prefer for dinner – ice cream or chicken and vegetables.

A friend of mine told me recently that her daughter, in preparation for her confirmation, asked her to listen to her recite the “Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit”. My friend thought back to her school days and seemed to remember that there were 12, not nine.

Blowing the dust off her catechism, she looked it up and, sure enough, there were 12.

What were the three the school’s religion book had conveniently left out? Generosity, chastity and modesty. Is it any wonder that young people think these virtues are out of date?

All Catholics have a duty to make a sincere effort to understand the wisdom of the church’s moral teaching and grow in their knowledge of the faith before throwing it aside and labelling it as “out of touch”.

But then again, pointing the finger at those in public office is probably easier.
