Madam, - What an amazing image on RTÉ's Six One Newson Thursday as the station trumpeted its achievement in transporting tons of TV transmission equipment to the summit of Croagh Patrick. The mission? To transmit Mass live from the summit this weekend. We watched as riggers struggled up the mountain under the weight of tons of equipment and a management person from RTÉ announced cheerfully that there were five more cameras to go and five miles of cabling.
And then, out of the skies, the Air Corps helicopter to help out with the job. Mind boggling! Like everyone else who has climbed the Reek, I understand the importance of the occasion. But as someone who also pays a licence fee I feel compelled to ask, are they all stark raving mad in Montrose. How can they justify this deplorable waste of resources and expense? How can the Air Corps justify it? In fact, what in the name of Saint Patrick were the Air Corps doing there at all? Only in Ireland, God help us. - Yours, etc,
