RTE LISTENING

Sir, When I switched on a radio in my bedroom in a Paris hotel at about 2 p.m. on a Monday, I was surprised to hear a Piano Concerto by John Field, with John O'Conor as soloist. My surprise was unwarranted. This would be perfectly normal listening in Berlin or St Petersburg. If I switched on our self styled premier station, RTE 1, at this time, I would probably hear a phone in discussion about who kicked whose head during weekend football.

Now we are, told that RTE executives consider such material too "heavy" (sic) for our moronic brains. Will they ask the footballers to wear carpet slippers, or will they replace them with loads of Rap? Miserere me, Deus, secundum magnam Misericordiam tuam. Yours, etc. Clontarf, Dublin 3,
