Sir, - Like your crusader extraordinaire, Kevin Myers, I have been awaiting a response from the Department of the Environment to his often amusing, but serious articles on the illogical state of our road signs, which use metric measurement for distances and imperial measurement for speed.
Your correspondent M.D. Kennedy (January 24th) has apparently been down this road before. In previous correspondence with him, the Department of the Environment denied having any responsibility for road signage.
If this really is the case, I would like to ask which Department is responsible for road signs? We could then move on to try and establish whether it is actually the Government's policy to mix metric and imperial measurements, or just a case of lethargy on behalf of the agency responsible. - Yours, etc.,
E.S. Lombard, Rathbeggan, Dunboyne, Co Meath.
