Sir, - The moans and groans of Dublin motorists about the proliferating humps/bumps/ramps are a clear indication of their impact. Drivers are now beginning to recognise that roads belong to human beings as well as to vehicles. All other manoeuvres have failed to slow their steel steeds. Better, in my opinion, a rattled chassis than a battered child. The statistics regarding pedestrians (usually children) struck by vehicles are clear: At 20 m.p.h. 5 per cent die; at 30 m.p.h. 45 per cent die; at 40 m.p.h. 85 per cent die.
Slowing traffic down has been shown to save lives and to prevent broken bodies. - Yours, etc.,
Denis G. Gill, Children's Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin 1.
