Sir, - I was interested to note (The Irish Times, August 10th) a most colourful picture of men, women and children enjoying the sun - and not a hat to be seen!
While one is reluctant to spoil the enthusiasm for our short-lived summer, 90 per cent of skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the sun. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland, affecting one in six men and one in nine women.
The Irish Cancer Society's SunSmart Campaign recommends taking care in the sun by wearing a hat with a brim, a shirt and sunglasses, as well as applying plenty of high-factor sunscreen. A short burst of strong sunshine can be hazardous and may promote the development of skin cancer in later life.
Studies report the depth of fear of cancer, yet we are reluctant to take care of ourselves and to prevent skin cancer by taking these simple precautions.
Readers who would like further information may obtain our leaflets on taking care in the sun or can discuss aspects of skin cancer with our nurses by contacting the Irish Cancer Society's Helpline weekdays on Freefone 1800 200 700. So remember, keep your hat (and your shirt) on! - Yours, etc., Avril Gillatt, Health Promotion Manager, Irish Cancer Society,
