Sir, – I posted a cheque to the Revenue Commissioners after lunch last Wednesday. To my surprise, on Thursday afternoon, I found the money had already left my bank account.

But it begs the question: Why do the banks still say it takes three to five days to clear a cheque? – Yours, etc,
