Sir, - Vincent Browne (Opinion, October 10th) raises questions relating to the crisis facing the world after the death of 6,000 people in the US. He compares this figure with one million in Rwanda and Burundi and "apparently" 2.5 million in the Congo.
Surely his use of the word "apparently" answers the question.
When it comes to the figure of loved ones lost in the US, we have a figure with a level of accuracy that the victims deserve. However, when speaking about the developing world and Africa in particular, the terms change dramatically, and a word such as "apparently" with all its attendant casualness becomes quite acceptable. - Yours, etc.,
