Madam, – As we had little mention or celebration of the 60th anniversary of the declaration of the Republic last Saturday, I suggest that in future the date, April 18th, be made a bank or public holiday called “Republic Day”.

It might also help to actually make our country a republic by stressing the values of such an institution, especially in light of the abrogation of these values by our elected representatives and their golden circle of top bankers,developers, speculators etc.

It might also help encourage equality of treatment and opportunity for all citizens, fair play, civic virtues and even true patriotism, not to mention a decent health and education service for all (not a two-tier one). “Up the Republic”. – Yours, etc,
