A chara, – I opened the newspaper as I sat on the train on December 14th what greeted me was a 77-year-old photograph of my grandfather Brendan O’Brien hoisted by the crowd and holding aloft the Bateman Cup. Despite him not being named I recognised him as captain of the winning UCC side in 1934 from family stories told.

My grandfather died, younger than he ought and before I could ever have met him, over 40 years ago, but it was with delight that I was able to contact my father, aunt and uncles to let them know and ensure a copy was delivered to my grandmother at her home in Liverpool where she still lives in what was their family home.

Thank you for providing this Christmas present. – Is mise,
