Remembering Brian Lenihan

Madam, – It is with deep regret and sorrow that I learned of the recent untimely passing of our dear friend Brian Lenihan. Much has been said about Brian over the last few days, all of which is true, and each dissertation gives us a brief glimpse of the truly outstanding politician of his generation. Brian, as he was affectionately known by us all in Dublin West, had a deep-rooted care of the people he represented and by extension the nation as a whole.

He touched the lives of so many people, old and young and his giving nature inspired all. His passing leaves a deep void in all our lives and he will be remembered both for his outstanding achievements within the constituency and his contribution to national and international politics in an era of unrivalled difficulties.

As a classical scholar, Brian epitomised the virtues and political vision of the philosopher kings, appreciating and prioritising the needs of people and he was always more concerned with our sovereign requirements rather than partisan politics. He was the epitome of the true philosopher king. To Patricia, Tom, Clare and all the Lenihan family goes my heartfelt sympathy. – Yours, etc,
