Reform of political funding

Madam, – Your Editorial on political funding (June 11th) raised some very relevant points. Anyone who canvassed for the recent elections will be well aware of the contempt people have for politics and politicians. This issue must be addressed if democracy is to survive.

I believe it should be made a criminal offence for any political party, holder of or candidate for public office to accept a donation from anyone. The taxpayers should be responsible for all electoral expenses, with a total ban on media advertising and postering in public places, which accounts for most of the expense.

If we want a fair, transparent electoral system we should be prepared to pay a reasonable price in the interest of democracy. – Yours, etc,

JAMES MORAN,
