Sir, - Further to "Y's" remarks about squirrels (Time's Eye, June 28th), it may interest your readers to know that red and grey squirrels seem to co-exist quite happily together in the Botanic Gardens, Dublin. Earlier this year I saw the two species in a tree within a few metres of each other, the smaller red being very noticeable alongside the grey. Both species were foraging through the branches, apparently oblivious of each other and there was certainly no suggestion that the greys were in any way aggressive to the reds.
Incidentally, this was on a mild day in late January or early February, rather disproving the theory that squirrels hibernate. - Yours, etc.,
Gordon Knaggs, Baldoyle Road, Sutton, Dublin 13.
