Sir, In her article entitled "Monster queues for dinosaur Barney lead to RDS closure on safety grounds" (April 29th), Audrey Magee quotes a Co Carlow grandmother as saying "They (the organisers of the event) should have known (about Barney's popularity) because every child from the moment they sit up and take notice at seven months to four years of age watches Barney every day . .
Could this possibly be true, and if so, should we not as thinking human beings question more seriously the mass power of the received image? The power to stop industry and clear the streets of Dublin during the 1994 World Cup the power to send out codes of value and behaviour to a generation of children worldwide. Is the world to be interpreted by "Barney"? Yours, etc.,
