Rebuilding Ireland home loans

Sir, – This “new” initiative seems very similar to the Small Dwellings Act (SDA) scheme of the 1950s – fixed-rate long-term transferable mortgages for first-time buyers. The transferability feature in the SDA scheme made it very easy for owners to move up the property ladder – the mortgage remained attached to the property and was simply “ taken over” by the new qualified owner. Old wine in new bottles , perhaps. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Politicians still haven’t grasped the fact that many people never have, and never will, be able to buy a house. Social housing provided by the State is an obligation and a responsibility. Managing this is the key to the problem. – Yours, etc,
