Sir, - I write concerning Dublin Corporation's plan for the Ranelagh Triangle site now that the public lavatory has been demolished.

In a handout, the Corporation refers to the site as being in need of urgent, high quality environmental/traffic improvement. Indeed it is!

So what have our urban planners come up with for this open space in the heart of Ranelagh? Perhaps a fountain, a monument to one of the many notable writers or artists who have lived here, or a tribute to the feats of the famous balloonist Richard Crosbie?

The planners in their wisdom have presented us with a traffic island, no less. There is provision for widening a footpath on one side and relocating the taxi rank, but no matter how it is dressed up this plan should be seen for what it is - a studied insult to those of us who have expressed grave concern over the years about the demise of the village character of Ranelagh. - Yours, etc.,
