Radio advertising – lose the music?

Sir, – How and why are advertising agencies managing to persuade companies that spoken radio advertisements have to be accompanied by a background of music? The music is distracting and makes it difficult for the listener to hear the advertisement. For those who are hard of hearing, as my mother was, these advertisements must be a nightmare. And unlike television, you cannot just switch the sound off. The most recent victim of this fashion is no less important an organisation than the body controlling the census. You would have thought that clarity of message was paramount. – Yours, etc,
