Sir, – I would like to commend Kathy Sheridan on her recent article (“The worst week of my life”, Weekend Review, November 26th). Darren Scully drew both national and international opprobrium for his comments last week, but any rational thinking person can see that this response has been somewhat disproportionate.
What he said was wrong but he has acknowledged this and apologised and did the right thing in resigning his mayoral position. Nevertheless, he now faces both party and council expulsion and recent reports indicate he may even lose his job. He must be given a second chance to rebuild his life and reputation. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – I am pleased to read that Darren Scully has learnt from his mistake. However, can I point out to the people he describes as having “serious issues” that not that long ago the Irish on this island used to see signs saying “no blacks, no Irish”. – Yours, etc,
