Sir, – Several public representatives have called for a referendum on the new European Stability Mechanism (September 23rd).

They are correct that such a euro zone rescue fund should be democratically legitimised.

However, instead of another blunt referendum, such complex economic governance structures should instead be negotiated and agreed with the legislative representative assembly of all EU citizens – the European Parliament. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I strongly suspect that in the near future a choice is going to be forced upon the Government of this country between full fiscal and economic union within Europe – and the transfer of sovereignty that goes with it – or exiting the euro zone altogether.

No matter which of these two options each of us would prefer, I think we can all agree that this would be a decision of such massive proportions and far-reaching consequences that it should not be left in the hands of the Government, but should be put to the people of Ireland, so that we can determine our own fate.

I feel it is also important that we be vigilant and ensure that there are no subtle clandestine moves towards full fiscal union without the explicit democratic consent of the people. – Yours, etc,
