Sir, - With so many driving on provisional licences unaccompanied by an experienced driver, it is ludicrous to expect any reductions in deaths and injuries on the roads This practice gives the message that the driving test is unimportant and greatly devalues the need to acquire driving skills.

If the Government really wishes to improve driving standards it should make it illegal to drive on one's own until the test has been passed.

From experience this is highly inconvenient for family members who have to supervise driving practice and go out late at night to collect from social functions, but it is surely the only responsible course of action. - Yours, etc.,

Mrs Katharine Davey, Shankill, Co Dublin.
