Madam, – Barry Colfer (May 14th) says he does not see why we have problems with political posters as unlike many countries worldwide we are able to enjoy the democratic franchise.
As a cyclist who was hit by a poster in the last election, I would like to enjoy a democratic freedom to not be hit by one, or even to have to suffer the visual pollution from them.
I suggest that when The Irish Times carries out its next poll it should include a question on putting up posters. It might help to put the debate to bed if the overwhelming response is against them.
As we are a mature democracy, why can we not also drastically restrict election funding?
Candidates’ policies could be included in one information booklet printed by the State and sent to each voter. Something similar to the type of booklet issued before referendums. – Yours, etc,
