The Irish Times and its partner in its programme of political polling, Market Research Bureau of Ireland, take a different view from Mr Coyle on the efficacy of telephone polling. In the particular circumstances of this referendum they judged that telephone polling would elicit more accurate information than calls to the door.
The results bear out that judgment. The poll conducted by Mr Coyle's Irish Marketing Surveys company on May 18th suggested a Yes vote of 65 per cent. The MRBI poll for The Irish Times was much more accurate, predicting a 71 per cent Yes vote. The referendum was, in fact, carried with a 71.1 per cent Yes vote.
