Sir, - I deplore any suggestion of immigrants being held in detention centres. At our current level of operation, people could be held in these for years on end. What is needed is an efficient system of coping with applications in a speedy and humane fashion befitting our Christian society with its new-found resources.
Where is the long memory of the Irish? Have we forgotten Ellis Island and coffin ships. Now, its detention centres and asylum ships. Is this really the best our collective intelligence can muster? Shame on us! - Yours, etc.,
Paul Bregazzi, Templeogue, Dublin 16.
