Madam, - Your piece by Frank McDonald regarding local opposition to the building of holiday homes and apartments in Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford, deserves our attention and dismay. Wexford County Council already has an unfortunate track record on planning decisions on holiday homes. Inadequate sewage facilities have already created problems in the area and small, beautiful villages have been sanitised by insensitive construction.
On a recent short holiday trip to south Wexford I was stunned by the urban-type residential/holiday developments at Arthurstown and Duncannon. There was little evidence of any regard for the unique nature of these wonderful places. I hardly think the local people enjoy seeing their communities raided in this way for, perhaps, a very short-term gain. And why would the tourist want to visit these towns as they become visually characterless?
Wexford County Council - wake up! To the people of Kilmore Quay, I say, "Thank you" for your endeavours to retain the heritage of your town in the face of speculative greed. - Yours, etc.,
FIONA Ó CLÉIRIGH, Orwell Road, Dublin 14.
