Sir, - So Katherine E. Zappone and Peadar Kirby (Opinion, August 13th) are worried that Progressive Democrat policies might cause poverty. A job is one of the best anti-poverty programmes. And the dramatic fall in unemployment, which they acknowledge is mainly due to the policies of economic liberalism, has been the most powerful cause of the reduction in poverty in recent years. Social welfare can ease the effects of poverty. It does not cure the causes. - Yours, etc.,
