Sir, – You argue in your editorial (April 5th) that many people who have paid the household charge are now likely to feel themselves “betrayed” that some Ministers now favour the handing over of the collection of this “property tax” to the Revenue Commissioners, and that such an action would be “an appalling travesty”.
I believe the opposite: the only “fiasco” that has occurred is that the State, by bungling its arrangements for the collection of this tax, has facilitated about half of those liable for it to leech off the backs of those who have complied with their civic duty. While no one exactly looks forward to receiving window envelopes from the Revenue Commissioners, like the Mounties they usually “get their man”. It is not too late to rectify the current State-inflicted injustice in an effective and efficient manner. – Yours, etc,
