Sir, - What is distressing about the proposed closure of the Packard plant, is the fact there is a good market for what they have been producing. Cutting the work force in half could never be the answer to their problem, especially when the overheads remain the same.

My guess is the system they have been operating was not the best system for a labour intensified industry. What can work in the Far East will not always work over here. Conditions which operate there, are not always acceptable here. Asking workers to work an extra two hours, if for the same wages, could only cause problems. I operated here and in the Far East. I never had any problems with my Irish workers, given the right motivation, they were as good, if not better than any others. - Yours, etc.,
