Madam, - A feature in your edition of July 24th suggested that the gross overcrowding at Dublin Airport is caused in part by passengers turning up too early.

On our most recent trip, we were advised that we should present ourselves 90 minutes before our flight. In fact, a period of 180 minutes proved barely adequate to check in both our suitcases and golf equipment at different desks. The entire period was spent in slow-moving queues for the few check-in desks which were staffed. Indeed, the only desk to display our flight number remained unattended throughout.

The remedy lies in the hands of the airlines and consists of providing an adequate number of check-in desks, adequately staffed. Surely it is not beyond the wit of the Dublin Airport Authority to devise a system of financial penalties to be imposed when a flight is delayed due to inadequate check-in resources or when passengers miss a flight due to luggage check-in delays. - Yours, etc,
