Outdated postal code plan

Sir, – The issue of location codes for Ireland has been raised yet again by PJ Maloney (March 28th). He points out that An Post does not want or need a postal code system, but argues for the introduction of a modern location code system. In fact such a system covering the 32 counties of Ireland has existed for some five years or more and is being adopted by local authorities, transport companies and emergency services. Unlike postal code systems such as that used in the UK, which can cover a number of addresses up to several kilometres apart, the Loc8 code is specific to a building and accurate to within plus or minus six metres. This system deserves to be more widely recognised and used. – Yours, etc,
