Organised religion

Sir, – Rob Sadlier in his letter of April 11th tells us that organised religion is not always a bulwark against various forms of fanaticism.

On the same day, Maria Jansson's article quotes the leader of 110 million Russian Orthodox Christians as being "an ardent supporter" of Vladimir Putin's war ("Christian leaders must unite in calling Moscow patriarch to account on Ukraine", Opinion & Analysis, April 11th).

Organised religions, being human institutions, are liable to be corrupted.

But the basic ethic of love of neighbour, though not always practised, is fundamental to all our religious institutions.

Hopefully it will continue to be basic to our society despite the fact that it is not always practised even by those whose job it is to preach it. – Yours, etc,
