Sir, - "Understand" is an ambiguous work meaning both comprehension and sympathy and its unfortunate use by Archbishop Eames in a BBC television interview on July 5th, when he said he "especially understood" the frustrations of the Protestant community in the present crisis over Drumcree, came dangerously close to implying the latter of these definitions.
I am sure this was not his intention but the effect was insulting to nationalists and offensive to members of the Church of Ireland like myself who are dismayed at the failure of our Church leaders to forthrightly condemn the irresponsibility of the Orange Order and the outrageous behaviour of its supporters. - Yours, etc.,
