On your bike, off the pavement

Madam, – There has been a noticeable increase in the number of people cycling on the footpaths in Dublin. It is commendable to see an increase in the use of bicycles, and hopefully a decrease in the number of cars, however many of the newer cyclists treat the city as a bike park. Cycling on the footpath is widespread.

We have had a number of complaints from our elderly friends, some of whom are unsteady on their feet and need to feel safe and secure on their streets. If elderly people fall and break a hip they may become house-bound for months.

Please, cyclists, keep to the road. – Yours, etc,

DERMOT KIRWAN,

Friends of the Elderly,

Bolton Street, Dublin 1.
