Sir - Travelling on Dublin Bus will never cease to be anything less than a unique experience.
Despite new quality bus corridors and substantial investment in new vehicles, buses still observe the "safety in numbers" rule. You cannot get change on fares and effectively make an obligatory donation to the company coffers every time you don't have exact change. And heaven help you if you object to bus drivers talking on their mobile phones as they drive. The driver is liable to roar at you that he's been driving buses longer than you've been travelling on them. A comfort, I'm sure, as the driver takes a corner with one hand on the wheel and ploughs into oncoming traffic.
And for all this, grateful passengers now thank the driver as they disembark. We've never had it so good. - Yours etc.,
Derek Scally, Raheny, Dublin 5.
