Sir, - As a citizen of the Republic I have always observed Remembrance Day and worn a poppy. I am therefore pleased by the attendance of our President at the ceremony in Mesen. Now as never before our State has honoured the Irish who died in British uniforms.
It has been suggested that this welcome development was possible only because of the Belfast Agreement. However, I would prefer to believe that the inherent decency and maturity of our people has finally asserted itself, independent of any political bargain struck by politicians. - Yours, etc.,
