Sir, – Don Cahalane’s stout defence (May 22nd) of Fr Tom Kelleher’s rebuttal (May 18th) of your Editorial (May 11th) on gay marriage is an admirable and loyal act of a supporter of Fr Kelleher’s spiritual ministry to his flock in Ballinspittle.
I would ask however, that both Fr Kelleher and Mr Cahalane reflect on the fact that those of us in the community who cannot marry our partners under current statutes are seeking the full institution of civil rights and not religious or spiritual ones.
It may well be argued that man has forgotten God, but the State has a responsibility to ensure that it does not forget equality for its citizens as articulated in Article 40 of Bunreacht na hÉireann, “All citizens shall, as human persons, be held equal before the law.” – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Fr Tom Kelleher’s fear that gay marriage spells the end of civilisation (May 18th), leaves me wondering not if I’ll die unmarried, but which one of the four horses I’ll be riding. – Yours, etc,
