Sir, - Mr McCreevy's nomination of Mr O'Flaherty was a monumental error and the Government's manner of support of this error is breathtakingly arrogant.

Essentially - and, I suspect, to the amusement and possible horror of current EIB board members - our Government is saying:

"In respect of this banking appointment we do not have a senior banker whose reputation is flawless, whose academic qualifications are excellent and whose proven track record in domestic and international banking is first class. However, we recommend instead a legal expert without banking expertise. Please also note that this person was discredited by his professional peers and was threatened with impeachment by this Government unless he resigned. To his credit he did resign, was awarded a special pension by this Government and is currently unemployed"!
