Not a 'broken town'

Madam, – I wish to take issue with Carl O’Brien’s review of Youghal (Uptown Downtown, Weekend Review, April 2nd). This is not a “broken town” and in my conversation with him I confirmed my optimism for its future.

Damaged perhaps, in its retail sector, as is every town and city in Ireland in this recession, but nothing can detract from the historical excellence and heritage of Youghal which continues to attract and reward visitors .

Youghal has miles of beautifully safe sandy beaches, an indoor amusement park, and a European award-winning swimming pool and leisure centre and a hope for the future of a marina to welcome those who sail our coastline.

Industrially, in the short term I believe we may have to rely on smaller indigenous producers, but the town has much available warehousing to attract and encourage entrepreneurial initiative. I remain an optimist! – Yours, etc,

GORDON GOOD,

Youghal, Co Cork.
