NORTH KILDARE REZONING

Sir, - I find it frightening to think that we, in County Kildare, are totally dependent on Dublin for our water supply

Sir, - I find it frightening to think that we, in County Kildare, are totally dependent on Dublin for our water supply. We receive roughly 4.6 million gallons of water daily from Dublin Corporation. This month the water demand, on some days, increased by 20 per cent, and Dublin Corporation was unable to meet this demand. The irony of the fact is that the water is coming from Kildare in the first place, namely Ballymore Eustace.

While councillors in Kildare accept that water is a major problem, I find it extraordinary that Fianna Fail, along with Fine Gael, collectively voted to rezone excessive amounts of land in north Kildare. Hence it seems to be totally irresponsible of these councillors that while, on one hand, they accept the problem of water shortages and poor water pressure throughout the region, on the other hand they cannot foresee the future problems brought about by this excessive rezoning.

If now, in 1996, we have such serious water problems, one dreads to think what the situation will be like in five years, as a result of these rezonings. - Yours, etc.,
