NOISY HELICOPTERS

MARGARET MARTIN,

MARGARET MARTIN,

Sir, - David Reddy in Sandymount (August 2nd) suffers but one noisy helicopter. Where I live we suffer many. We know to the minute when the last putt has been sunk at the K Club. Where are all those people rushing to within minutes of the end of the competition?

The annual canoe race, the International Liffey Descent, is now plagued by the presence of a helicopter filming the event each year. A camera person hangs precariously from the open door of the noise machine, which hovers so low that trees are bowed, Liffey waters are stirred up, livestock is alarmed and the competitors haven't a hope of hearing the cheers of their supporters. Who sees this movie anyway?

Anyone attending race meetings has a similar experience. Is it now a mark of importance to travel by helicopter or is this form of transport the ultimate in avoiding the traffic jam? Perhaps it is evidence of the "I want it yesterday" culture.
