Sir, - I am hoping this means of communication may serve to allow me to vent my anger and frustration with the so called "Vat Back" found throughout Ireland in various shops. My wife and I have visited for the fifth time and made several purchases in local shops, receiving the appropriate voucher to be filled in and turned in at the departure airport in Shannon.
Several of our friends have had similar experiences and all report the same results. In our case our departure was in August 1996 and to this date no credit has ever been issued to the Visa card used. Our friends are waiting over one year with the same negative results. There simply is no VAT back. I am going to warn any friends travelling to Ireland not to make any purchases unless the merchant removes VAT at the point of sale. Too bad, but the fact is simply that you never get your VAT back. - Yours etc,
