Madam, – We have a country that has been brought to the brink of bankruptcy because a small number of people at the head of government, banks and building became virtually untouchable. Yet we have correspondents like HJ Beckett calling for the setting up of a “national government” (October 1st).

A national government without an opposition would be a dictatorship. If the hubris of people, who thought themselves untouchable, has damaged the country so much in the past, imagine what a national government with no opposition would do.
