Sir, – Margaret Mangan, (November 30th) bemoans the recent commercialisation of St Stephen’s Day which changed what was traditionally a family relaxation day to one which is no different to any other shopping day in the calendar.
Although I share her sentiments on the mercenary aspect of Christmas, St Stephen’s Day has long since lost many of its Irish traditions and distinct characteristics and adopted many of those of our British neighbours. St Stephen’s Day is referred to by many, especially sports commentators on RTÉ, as Boxing Day.
No more “going into town” to do some shopping, we are now invited to view the bargains in the high street sales. What next? Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas Day speech broadcast live on RTÉ? – Yours, etc,
