Madam, – RTÉ News and other media outlets are reporting, with some prominence and excitement, the creation of 300 new jobs in a number of retail outlets in the Dundrum Shopping Centre. This is indeed positive news. However, as consumer spend is in the doldrums, consideration must be given to “displacement” as these new jobs will to some degree lead to losses elsewhere. It is surely important that the media maintains a more balanced approach to announcements of new jobs in the retail sector and question where the consumer demand is coming from and where spend will reduce. – Yours, etc,
