Madam, - Your Environment Editor, Frank McDonald, deserves the thanks of all those who love the streetscapes of Dublin for his article about the new building beside City Hall (Property, March 8th) - a building from which citizens and visitors will avert their eyes in disgust.

Can we hope that soon he will call for the use of "pasticcio" design principles for new constructions adjacent to existing Georgian buildings? The use of such design in a compact and architecturally unified historic area would have given us a sensitive building that continued the roofline of the existing structures and maintained their proportions and surface treatments.

Instead, because of post-modernism's complete lack of aesthetic principles of its own and its refusal to recognise those of others, we have architectural hooliganism in steel, glass and concrete to a degree that beggars belief.

Mr McDonald has had his eyes opened by this atrocity. Let us hope that the same will happen to those responsible for specifying public developments in the city and that in future they will respect the beauty that we have all inherited. - Yours, etc,
