NEUTRALITY UNDER THREAT

Sir, - It is now clear that Fine Gael, the Labour Party, and the Progressive Democrats support greater military collaboration with the nuclear armed Western European Union and the NATO sponsored Partnership for Peace; steps which would mean decisive moves towards the destruction of our neutrality and our integration into a nuclear armed superstate, which is the goal of many influential figures in the EU, such as the presidents of the EU and the commission.

These developments are opposed by Fianna Fail, the Greens and Democratic Left. The difference of opinion within both Government and Opposition clearly reflects the division that exists among the Irish people.

Since the destruction of our neutrality was never put before the Irish people in a general election, and was not part of the programme for government in either the FF/Labour coalition or the FG/Labour/DL coalition, the Peace and Neutrality Alliance calls on the Government not to make a decision on the issue until a referendum is held, a promise that was part of the Programme for Government. - Yours, etc.,

Chair,
