Madam, - In the few days since Shane Geoghegan's brutal murder I have repeatedly heard Limerick people call for capital punishment, lynching, internment and vigilante style vengeance.
Normally, these same people are ordinary, reasonably liberal, educated, working people. Their usual sense of social justice, civil rights and human dignity has been eroded by too much savage violence. They feel abandoned and ignored by our politicians.
How many more innocent citizens have to be sacrificed before the Government insists upon prison sentences that truly reflect society's condemnation of these horrific crimes? - Yours, etc,
