Sir, – May I congratulate Kevin Cardiff on his forthcoming appointment as Ireland’s representative on the European audit body (“MEPs approve Cardiff appointment”, December 13th)? A tremendous achievement for someone who was rejected less than three weeks ago by some MEPs.
However, all was not lost, as I appreciate the efforts of our Taoiseach Enda Kenny who lobbied EPP leader Joseph Daul to ensure the EPP’s support for his nominee (Arthur Beesley, December 13th).
In light of that revelation, will the head of the Public Appointments Service body for the appointment of senior civil servants remove the following line from the application forms and packages: “Candidates should note that canvassing will disqualify and will result in their exclusion from the processes”. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – So it’s true, governments can create jobs. Fine Gael and Labour, after months of lobbying, managed to create one for Kevin Cardiff. Will they now do the same for the 450,000 people on the Live Register? – Yours, etc,
