Madam, - Recent editions of The Irish Times report that the outgoing Presbyterian moderator, Dr Harry Uprichard, refused to attend an annual service for deceased members of the RUC because he objected to the presence of Catholic clergy.

This action by Dr Uprichard can only be interpreted as a considered and deliberate insult to the whole Catholic community on this island.

If a so-called pillar of Christ's love can behave in such a bigoted and undignified manner, apparently without rebuke, then surely we have a fundamental failure of Christian and moral leadership within the Presbyterian church which must be tackled by the Presbyterian General Assembly.

One can only hope that the incoming moderator will have the moral courage to jettison the tentacles of sectarianism and make his church a meaningful player in the creation of a new society on this island. - Yours, etc,
